Rot-free tree that shaped Tasmania’s economy | WIDE

Описание к видео Rot-free tree that shaped Tasmania’s economy | WIDE

The island of Tasmania is home to the oldest tree species in the world; the oldest Huon pine that’s currently standing in the Tasmanian forest is 3,400 years old. But it is the other distinct characteristic which made this tree so valuable and sought after. Huon pine is rot-resistant and won’t decay in water thanks to its natural oil.

Tasmania’s timber industry was established by convicts sent over from England in the 19th century. And European colonists made their fortune off the Huon pine. A retired lumberjack Ron Morrison recounts the history of Tasmania’s timber industry and his experiences.
