This video was made by Ben Bland as a short documentary highlighting the nature of medical resources available in Malawi and the scale of their health crisis. Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) is the main government hospital in Malawi’s capital city, Lilongwe.

The video documents a day in the life of surgeons, anaesthetists and therapists from Norway and the UK working together as a charity to try and help treat patients, educate staff and improve facilities.

Mr Nik Jagodzinski was leading a charity team from the British Society of Surgery for the Hand as part of their 5-year mission to train the first hand surgeons in Malawi. As one of the first members of the team to go out, the new LION unit had not officially opened yet, so all work was on the original hospital site at KCH. Demand for surgery far outweighed available provision.

Nik Jagodzinski helped train local surgeons and other BSSH surgeons to perform WALANT surgery in their Emergency Department and in their main operating theatres which extended their scope of practice when anaesthetic and main theatre operating resources are scarce.

Nik Jagodzinski is a Consultant Hand, Wrist and Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon and runs a private clinic called The Hand and Wrist Clinic in North Devon.
