Did you know the difference between meteoroid, meteor, and meteorite?
You look at the stars at night and see a light streak across the sky and disappear.
"Wow, a shooting star!" you think.
But what is it really?
A "shooting star" is a meteor.
A meteor is the streak of light you see in the sky when a small object enters the atmosphere at high speed and burns up due to friction with the atoms and molecules in the atmosphere.
Before this tiny fragment of a comet or asteroid enters Earth's atmosphere, it floats through interplanetary space and is called a meteoroid.
Most meteoroids that enter the atmosphere burn up completely, becoming meteors.
However, in some cases, the meteoroid doesn't burn up entirely, and the object actually reaches the Earth's surface.
The fragment that survives its fiery journey is called a meteorite.
