Jyoti Vrudhashram Seva Sanstha (JVSS) is a compassionate not for profit organisation established in 2016 in Thane, Mumbai dedicated to serving the elderly community by providing holistic home based compassionate care and support to seniors in distress and ensuring their physical, emotional and social well being so that they are able to live through their twilight years with dignity.

Aging is a natural process but comes with its own unique challenges like deterioration of mental and physical abilities, which results in helplessness and an inability to support oneself. With the break up of the traditional Joint Family System in metropolitan cities in India, it becomes increasingly difficult to respond to the needs of the elderly members of the family and immediate support and care required is not forthcoming from family members. Especially where there is economic instability in the family, the seniors are considered as a burden on the family and abandoned to fend for themselves and lead sub human lives.

So far, very limited intervention has been made by a few organizations to address the problems of this vulnerable section of society, and JVSS is one of these.

Our guest on the Podcast, Mrs. Malti Kanojia, is the Founder and Secretary of JVSS. She lost her father in her early years due to chronic illness, leaving her mother to singly fend for her four children - three daughters and one son. Her mother’s income from running a small laundry in a slum area of a Mumbai suburb was not sufficient to meet the expenses of four children, so the children were admitted in Ashadeep, a shelter home for children of needy widows. Maltiji completed her education from Ashadeep while simultaneously teaching the children there. After some years, she joined Dhirubhai Kokilaben Hospital in the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Division, where she learnt about compassionate care for the highly vulnerable patients of organ transplant surgeries.

As a child, Maltiji had experienced helplessness at not being able to help her father in his suffering, and this feeling of helplessness combined with her learnings in the area of healthcare at the Hospital, led to the foundation of JVSS in 2016 in partnership with her husband, Mr. Kamlakar Tamhankar, who had also worked as a Brother at the Dhirubhai Kokilaben Hospital and gained enough knowledge on medical procedures carried out at the Hospital.

JVSS started with 20 patients, limited funds and never say die spirit of its Founder, where initially all activities from changing of diapers, cooking, cleaning, extending medical care to the patients and back office work was done by Maltiji and Kamlakarji themselves, as there were no funds to employ any staff. Today, JVSS houses 70 patients under the loving and compassionate care of Maltiji and her dedicated team.

We salute Maltiji for her perseverance and dedication in undertaking this highly challenging work of providing the needy elders of the community loving care and support and a dignified life during the final stage of their lives and wish the team at JVSS all success and blessings for their noble work.
