1999. Sparks were flying from the "Y2K" scare and other end-of-the-century commotions. It had been a while since my move from Kyoto to Tokyo, but the feeling despondency I'd had in my Kyoto days -- the feeling that I was carrying around an oppressive, dark, leaden cloud -- had not really left me. I was also feeling that something in my musical style and approach remained unclear. At the same time, in order to make a living, I was going from one session musician job to another. It was a period of emotional and physical instability, in which I felt as if I were moving parallel with, and at a three-meter remove from, the rest of the world. This album contains a group of works that I recorded, in a sketch-like way, during that time.
My own special theme was "the acid interpretation of the results of my confrontation with noise and black-music-style rhythms." Probably. Having said that, what I was doing was simply going to the studio to record, in a vague sort of way, phrases that naturally occured to me or that I remembered from the past.
The fact that these works were realized without ending up as mere excretions of drowning in old-fashioned values is due entirely to the amazing skill of the participating musicians (most of whom asked for no fee) and the production talent of Tatsuki Masuko, who willingly took on the job of producer. The reason I decided to cast my own work -- and material that I recorded ten years ago at that -- into the sea of music already out there is that I've realized (belatedly) the importance of showing at least a minimum of courtesy to everyone involved; because years on, I am keenly aware of my gratitude for the warm, human -- how can I put it? -- connection between souls.
