A lot of people think they know how to take a time out, but it is not as easy as it sounds. Dr. Harry McCleary, Navy Veteran and licensed clinical psychologist, breaks down the sometimes oversimplified steps of taking a time out and gives his helpful tips to set yourself up for success. Taking a time out is an oldie but goodie and time tested stress management technique. However, sometimes steps are missed and sometimes when steps are missed you actually become more stressed or more anger. Dr. McCleary shows go to avoid the traps and pitfalls.

Step #1: Communicate with the other person/s that you are taking a time out.
Pro Tip: Tell the people around you that you are going to practice taking a time out the next time you get upset LONG before you do.

Step #2: Walk away
Pro tip: While you are away, utilize your tools to calm down

Step #3: COME BACK!! (if you don’t come back, it’s not a timeout)
Pro tip: Do not come back until you are ready
