❌ Common Recall Mistakes ❌

Repeating the cue over and over until your dog finally responds. (If your dog’s not responding, saying it louder won’t help!)

Calling your dog only when it’s time to leave the park. (If recall always means the lead goes on, they’ll learn to avoid it.)

Using a dull or frustrated tone that doesn’t motivate them. (Would you run back to someone who sounds miserable and offers nothing in return?)

Not rewarding them enough when they do come back. (If you’re asking them to leave the fun, they must know it’s worth their while!)


✅ How to Fix It ✅

Say your recall cue ONCE, then pause—give them a chance to respond before you make it happen using a long line. Show them that recall is a non-negotiable.

Make recall rewarding! It could be treats, play, engagement, jobs, or anything your dog loves. Turn recall into something they enjoy, and you’ll never have to chase them again!

Be the best thing in the environment! Sound exciting and be interesting—if you’re more fun than the distractions, your Labrador will WANT to come back to you.

Reward generously when they come back, so they’ll always want to return.

Set them up for success! Choose the right environments for training—start in low-distraction areas and use a long line to prevent mistakes. The more they get it right, the more reliable their recall will be!
