An Earthship Can be a Sustainable Home in the Suburbs | Act Local

Meet Amy! She dreamed of an eco home on a block in the ‘burbs, so she built Australia's first suburban earthship in Adelaide.

Earthships are an example of sustainable housing, created with recycled materials like old car tyres, and natural materials like rammed earth. Another integral feature of earthships is their passive solar house design, which works in cohesion with the available elements to power the entire space. It’s no wonder these sustainable homes are emerging as a popular choice for off-grid living.

Amy was first curious about the idea of earthships after creating dwellings out of plastic bottles in Nicaragua, which inspired her to take that notion into her future eco-home build. And boy, was she serious! Amy jetted off to New Mexico to attend the Earthship Biotecture Academy for a month to learn the ins and outs of sustainable house design – a journey which led her to Marty from Earthship Eco Homes.

After months of planning and plopping down rammed earth, her earthship was born. And we reckon it looks pretty neat. It also saves 900 tyres from landfill!

Come with us as set sail into this incredible sustainable home.
