New York Governor Andrew is tightening restrictions on bars and restaurants as the COVID-19 infection rate continues to rise in New York.
Cuomo said all restaurants, bars and gyms statewide will have to close at 10 p.m. starting Friday, a major retreat in a corner of the U.S. that had seemingly brought the virus largely under control months ago.
The news came with great disappointment for New York's hard hit hospitality industry.
At McSorley's, one of New York's most famous bars, owner Teresa de la Haba said while she is hopeful her bar will survive, she thinks the 10 pm curfew could be a "nail in the coffin" for some bars.
"Hopefully we survive and I'm sure we will because, you know, it's a small staff here, but it definitely, you know, it's sucks. It does," said de la Haba.
Derek Tigue, partner at the popular Forgtmenot bar in New York's Lower East Side, said he thinks the 10pm curfew is only the beginning.
"We feel like there's potentially more restrictions going to come ahead. You know, again, we look at the model in London, model in Ireland, the rest of Europe, you know, these restrictions kind of come in gradually. And then, you know, we're just just hoping that we're not going to get shut down completely," said Tigue.
Cuomo also barred private gatherings of more than 10 people.
