In a genuine aeroponic system the roots are suspended in a mist environment. The mist environment is comprised of droplets with a range of 5-80 microns. The mist environment is maintained within a narrow moisture range by small but frequent additions of mist In genuine aeroponics the roots are not misted directly and there is no defined wet/dry cycle. The mist environment provides the roots with the optimal level of oxygen, water and nutrient all of the time. The roots are never wet or dry, they are kept at a consistent dampness . A lot of folks consider aeroponics as a subset of hydroponics, which is true with systems that are simply labelled as "aeroponic", such as Tower Garden for example. If you compare the roots grown in these systems to genuine aeroponic roots you will clearly see the difference. The aeroponic root structure is responsible for all of the benefits associated with aeroponics.
The best way i can describe the aeroponic environment is to imagine a "theoretically perfect" soil that contains the optimal amount of moisture, nutrient and oxygen at all times, and then imagine it without the soil. What you are left with is the aeroponic environment. Genuine aeroponics allows you to control the moisture and the nutrient in the mist environment to the nth degree. The very small amount of water and nutrients required allows you to run the system to waste without penalty. This provides additional benefits, the plants receive pristine nutrient with an optimal elemental content all of the time. There is no risk of debris or pathogens returning from the root chamber to contaminate the nutrient or the system itself because nothing ever comes back. There is no need for daily PH or EC checks or adjustments, no top ups and no need to dump the reservoir due to elemental imbalance.
