Why do we have 3 bottles for drainage of pneumothorax/hydropneumothorax?

1 bottle is ok for simple pneumo drainage
2 cm water seal to prevent air from going from bottle to pleural cavity if pt generates a deep breath ? large negative insp pressure, and one tube is vented out to atmosphere to let air out

2 bottles if we want to apply suction for pneumo
amount of wall suction is equal to the amount of tube submerged in water

3 bottles for hydropneumothorax drainage with suction
here we need to drain the fluid in the 1st bottle thee fore this is the additional bottle , the other 2 bottles have the same principle as above


now in most places we use pleurevac which is having the same principles as 3 bottle drainage but there is only single unit instead of 3 bottles
