A shocking revelation has emerged from Sabarimala Ayyappa Swamy Temple, where an alleged large-scale gold theft inside the sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagudi) has come to light.

According to the SIT investigation, in 2019, gold-plated sheets from the sanctum were removed under the pretext of repairs and sent to a private workshop in Chennai. Investigators allege that chemicals were used to separate the original gold, after which ordinary copper sheets were polished and reinstalled, allegedly to conceal the theft.

Highly valuable gold sheets depicting Dashavatars and zodiac symbols were reportedly misrepresented in official records as “ordinary copper sheets.” The SIT claims that the alleged conspiracy was carried out under the instructions of the then Devaswom Commissioner N. Vasu.

Adding a political twist to the case, a photograph of the main accused Unnikrishnan Potti with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has gone viral, sparking intense political debate. However, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the SIT probe is proceeding in the right direction and that a CBI inquiry is not required at this stage.

Cases have been registered against former officials N. Vasu, Padmakumar, and private jewellers. N. Vasu, who is currently in jail, has approached the Supreme Court seeking bail.

This case has raised serious questions about the protection of temple assets and devotees’ faith.
