Nocturne has a similar gameplay style as the original Resident Evil 1. The main character moves through fixed camera angles of pre-rendered backgrounds. Unlike RE1, there is no inventory management and many areas are (vast and sometimes empty). This results in the player having to traverse is the map to find key items or pathways. There is also plenty of ammunition available, just the health items can be sparse.

Nocturne has an interesting story with many cutscenes and memorable characters. The main character is called "Stranger" and working for a secret, fictional government agency called Spookhouse. He's send around the world to investigate supernatural activities, hunt down dangerous monsters and recover obscure artifacts. At times, the main character is working with a half-vampire colleague called Svetlana Lupescu. She was later on renamed and starred in her own game series Bloodrayne (developed originally under the title 'Nocturne 2').

On release, Nocturne received mixed reviews. It was praised for it's strong technical presentation with top notch graphics at the time. The story and cutscenes are way above average for the genre. The controls are tight and allow to aim/attack while walking or side-stepping. On the flip side, many areas are empty and some of the pathways are difficult to find with no hints on where to go. In the later volumes (especially Volume 4) it's unclear where to go and what to do without the use a guide. This can create confusion and frustration.
