Listen to the sounds of soft rain falling in the savannahs of Africa.

The classic image of the African bush tells a story of vast and arid landscapes, parched by the sun and shrouded in dust. That is not the full picture though. For a few months per year, the seasonal rains bring a bit of respite to East and Southern Africa. It's a side of this continent that we seldom see, but without it these plains would be lifeless.

A couple of years ago I was in the Masai Mara with a group of friends, right at the tail end of the rainy season. The days were sunny and a bit windy, with soft rain in the evenings and overnight. The wildlife was fairly quiet at night - perfect conditions for rain recording. After a bit of exploration I found a little gorge nestled between hillsides and set up a drop rig there.

This is a very sparse and calm soundscape. The biophony element is very limited, with occasional insect sounds and only a few distant hyenas, lions and zebras calling. The rain keeps a steady rhythm throughout, nicely spread in the stereo field around my tree ears setup. I can listen to this type of soundscape continuously without ever getting tired of it.
