As he lay dying in a cheap Paris hotel room his literal last words were complaining about the wallpaper: "Alas, I am dying beyond my means, One of us has to go." Even at the END, he was HILARIOUS.
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) "Beyond my means" = spending more than you can afford. He lived extravagantly his whole life—even death was too expensive. It's about living WITHOUT restraint and accepting the consequences. He CHOSE extravagance over security and had no regrets. The joke is self-awareness: he KNOWS he's broke, finds it funny. Living large vs. dying broke—he picked living large.
My Snarky 2cents?: "Wilde died broke, exiled, and in a cheap hotel—but at least he had MATERIAL." • "He spent everything on pleasure and had nothing left for death—perfect budget allocation." •

"Most people save for death. Wilde spent it all on LIFE. Who's smarter?"

Modern Applications: Anyone who chooses passion over pension. Artists who spend everything on their craft. People who travel instead of save. Living richly vs. dying rich. YOLO culture—spend it now because you can't take it with you.This man spent his whole life living extravagantly. And even in death, he's complaining that dying is TOO EXPENSIVE for him. That's commitment to a brand.
But there's wisdom here. Wilde lived BIG. He didn't hold back. He spent everything—money, energy, wit. And even though it left him broke? He had NO REGRETS. He went out on his own terms.
Are you living beyond your means? Maybe. But are you LIVING? That's the real question.
And if you die beyond your means? At least you lived.
