The Canadian horse, also known as the Cheval Canadian, is a hardy and versatile breed that holds a special place in Canada's equine history. Often referred to as the "Little Iron Horse," this breed is celebrated for its strength, endurance, and gentle temperament. Descended from horses brought to North America by French settlers in the 17th century, the Canadian horse has played a crucial role in agriculture, transportation, and even military campaigns. Today, it is recognized as a national treasure and is prized for its adaptability and resilience.
The Canadian horse's origins trace back to the late 1600s when King Louis XIV of France sent shipments of horses to New France (modern-day Quebec). These horses, likely of Breton, Norman, and Andalusian descent, were bred in isolation for centuries, developing into a distinct and hardy breed. Over time, the Canadian horse became indispensable to settlers, serving as plow horses, carriage pullers, and cavalry mounts. However, by the 19th century, crossbreeding and exports nearly led to the breed's extinction. Thanks to dedicated preservation efforts in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Canadian horse was saved from disappearing. In 2002, it was officially declared Canada's national horse.
