oops- and use framerate locking let the video card simply relax once it has hit the number you need.
(eg vsync or lock to 30/40/60 frames per second if the game allows)

and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND change only ONE SETTING between benchmark runs to see what THAT CHANGE MAKES....
(if you change three things you will not know what each feature changed with the single output number at the end of the benchmark run... one change, observe and maybe take a note using pen and paper; rinse, repeat..)
