You have a baby on the way. Congrats! Time to schedule your first prenatal appointment.
What to Expect When: You Have Your First Prenatal Appointment
BEFORE
Your practitioner will want to know your health history, so brush up on the basics. Make a list of surgeries, immunizations, allergies, mental health history, pregnancy history, family health history, meds and supplements.
Make sure you know the date your last period started. This is important, since it's used to calculate your due date!
Write down the questions you want to ask your doctor.
Who will deliver my baby?
Should I change my diet or exercise habits?
Do I need to stop using any beauty products, supplements or OTC meds?
Am I at increased risk for any pregnancy complications?
Any other restrictions I should know about?
DURING
Expect lots of tests: urine test, bloodwork, STD tests and a pap smear.
You will probably have your first ultrasound. Some doctors prefer to wait until there's more to see.
It's too early to find out the sex. But you will get your official due date!
Your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes, such as exercising more or less, or lowering your stress levels.
AFTER
You will probably be asked to schedule appointments once per month until your 28 weeks along. At that point, you'll start going in more often as you get closer to the big day.
It will be here before you know it!
