USS Atlanta (CL-51) was a United States Navy light cruiser that was commissioned on Christmas Eve of 1941. She was the lead ship of her class and was originally designed to be scout and/or destroyer leader. As such, she was equipped with a main battery of dual-purpose 5-inch guns instead of the 6-inch guns that were found throughout the US light cruiser inventory at the time. Atlanta saw significant action in the Pacific Theater during 1942, including at the Battle of Midway and throughout the Guadalcanal Campaign. She fought valiantly during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on November 12/13, 1942, where she was heavily damaged by enemy and friendly fire, which led to her sinking on the evening of November 13th, 1942. USS Atlanta earned five battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation for her service.
