Many school districts are now using sprawling digital surveillance systems to monitor students’ online lives in an effort to thwart school shootings and prevent suicides or self-harm. But the growing use of such technologies has so far yielded just a few reports of averted school violence, while shining a big spotlight on the problems of suicide and self-harm among children. The surveillance of students’ social media and their private digital content on school-issued devices is yielding huge quantities of data that school administrators must sift through to determine if there are potential threats. Civil liberties advocates are sounding the alarm about the large amount of data being collected.
