The Grand Theft Auto National Football League (GTANFL) is a professional American football league that consists of 24 teams, divided equally between the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The NFL is one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada and the highest professional level of American football in the world. Each GTANFL season begins annually with a four-week preseason in August, followed by the 17-week regular season, which runs from early September to early January, with each team playing 16 games and having one bye week. Following the conclusion of the regular season, six teams from each conference, including four division winners and two wild card teams, advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament, which culminates in the Super Bowl, played in early February between the winners of the AFC and NFC championship games.

The Los Santos Pounders (stylized as LS Pounders) is the professional football team based in Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto V. The team is inspired by various Los Angeles based football teams, such as the Los Angeles Rams (the name and usage of yellow in the uniforms), the Los Angeles Raiders (silver and black and shield), and the Los Angeles Chargers (the bolt design on the logo). Just like the Pounders, all of these teams were based in different cities in 2013 (St. Louis, Oakland, and San Diego respectively). The word "pounders" is both a reference to the name of the Rams (ramming; pounding) and to a sexual act.

The San Fierro 69ers are an American football team based in San Fierro, San Andreas. Their home stadium is the Corvin Stadium, located in the Foster Valley district of San Fierro. The team colors are red and possibly blue (since that is the color of the team T-shirt which can be purchased at ProLaps). The official game website describes the 69ers as "the most up and down, you win some, you lose some team in sports". The name "69ers" is a combination of the real-life San Francisco 49ers football team and the 69 position. The logo is based on a 1991 concept logo for the aforementioned team, which was received negatively and then retracted.
