Poison is a common cause of death, usually through drugs and carbon monoxide. We also see poison quite a lot in media and video games, but what even is it? How is it able to kill us? In this video, I will be discussing what poison is and how it kills us!
Starting with the definition, poison is any substance that harms or kills living tissue, usually through chemical reactions. Not to be confused with toxins, which is any poisonous substance specifically produced by a living cell, or with venom, which is any toxin that is specially used to be injected into a wound or bite. So if you bite something and you die, then that thing is poisonous, and if something bites you and you die, then that thing is venomous. Both poison and venom are types of toxins, but we are just focusing on poison today.
A famous line to note when it comes to poison is from Paracelsus, the father of toxicology, who stated that “all things are poison, and nothing is without poison, the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison.” In simple terms, any substance can be poisonous if you ingest or absorb too much of it, even water. Since anything can be poisonous, there isn’t a specific poison that kills you, different things just kill you in different ways depending on how much you ingest. Let’s go over a few examples!
Starting with water, which is simply known as water poisoning. If you drink too much water, your cells, especially neurons, will start to swell and fill up with too much water, causing your brain to swell as well. However, the brain has no room to expand inside your skull, and as a result, you can go into a coma, and eventual death. Another effect caused by an abundance of water is hyponatremia, which is a low concentration of sodium in your blood, due to the water diluting them. This can also lead to brain swelling and seizures.
Another example is carbon monoxide poisoning, which is caused by inhaling too much carbon monoxide gas, usually as a result of fires. This odorless and colourless gas can replace the oxygen in your body if inhaled, therefore suffocating you from the inside. Going back to the quote, inhaling a tiny bit of carbon monoxide is okay, but inhaling huge amounts of it will probably kill you.
And there we have it! Poison is any, and I mean any, substance that can harm and kill living cells. However, there isn’t a single poisonous thing that can kill you, anything can be poisonous if you have too much of it, but everything poisonous kills you in different ways. As examples, water poisoning can swell up your brain and kill you, while carbon monoxide poisoning can replace your body’s oxygen and suffocate you. I hope that y’all have learned something interesting today, thank you for watching, and good luck with everything!
