Hello, I'm Justin Mathew. I'm a spine surgeon with the Norton Leatherman Spine Center. I went into medicine because I wanted to leverage my interest in math and science to help patients and society more generally. During medical school, I found that I enjoyed surgery and helping patients with my hands. At the same time, I had a growing interest in biomechanics, which ultimately led me to orthopedic surgery. Now, spine surgery, specifically, is fascinating to me because it allows me to treat a wide range of conditions in both adults and children, from tumors to trauma, to deformity, to degenerative conditions.

In addition to treating patients surgically, I also am passionate about driving innovation in patient healthcare quality outcomes through my role as an active clinical researcher. Developing a personalized plan for patients based on their whole picture, including their symptoms and the radiographic findings, based on the best available evidence, is the cornerstone of my philosophy for patient care.

I had my bachelor's degree at Harvard and undergrad in neuroscience. I then went on to get my medical degree at UCLA before going back home to New York to get my training done in orthopedic surgery. That training also included time working with complex spinal deformity. I then rounded out my surgical training here at the Norton Leatherman Spine Center in their combined orthopedic and neurosurgical spine fellowship.

Spine surgery can be very daunting for patients. They come in, they have a lot of concerns, understandably, and the procedures can be risky. We do some small procedures, but we also do a lot of large procedures. For me, it's important to make sure patients are comfortable, we get a chance to know each other, and they really get a sense of what's going on with their back and how we can help. Outside of work and surgery or research, I enjoy spending time with my family, going outside, hiking, cooking, traveling.
