02:16 - #1 Organization

Import your files or consolidate audio files
Rename files to make more sense while mixing
Add markers
Route audio to submixes/effects

04:38 - #2 Checking Your Tracks

Ensure all audio is there
Check for corrupt audio or any other mistakes

05:18 - #3 Gain Staging

Make sure none of your tracks are clipping
Add gain plugin to tame tracks that are too loud

07:01 - #4 Checking Phase and Polarity

Check polarity and phase on multi mic recordings
e.g. drum kits, guitar amps, vocals with multiple mics

12:17 - #5 Applying Surgical EQ

Remove objectively bad sounds from tracks
Things like a ring in a drum, muddiness, unnecessary low-end, etc.
Do this in solo, but be sure to just focus on bad sounds. Save the shaping for the full mix

14:51 - #6 Vocal Automation

Bring up quiet parts and lower loud parts of the vocal
Make it more consistent
That way when you apply EQ and compression in the mix, it's easier and sounds even more consistent after
Do it by hand or use something like Waves Vocal Rider

Most things in mixing aren't 100% consistent. Maybe there's stuff you do in 90% of mixes, but every now and then you do it differently. Personally, there is one thing that I do in every single mix without failure.

You ready?

I prepare the mix before I start mixing. This may sound boring, and I think this is why a lot of people skip over this phase. I think preparing the mix is vital and sets you up for a great mix.

Watch now to learn what mix prep is, why it's important, and how you can do it in your next mix. Don't forget to download the free cheat sheet https://www.musicianonamission.com/be...
