The development of renewable and alternative fuels and chemicals from biomass resources is becoming increasingly important because of the depletion of fossil fuels and global warming. Bioglycerol is produced as a byproduct during the biodiesel manufacturing process. The conversion of bioglycerol to more valuable products is vital to valorizing this co-product.

This project aims to design a process to produce 30,000 metric tons/year of acrolein via bioglycerol dehydration. A suitable flowsheet for the dehydration process will be developed. The project will include detailed mass and heat balances of the developed flowsheet. The design of the major equipment, such as the reactor, will be accomplished in this project. The process will be optimized to reduce energy and operating costs. An economic analysis will be conducted to study the feasibility of this process.
