Experts from the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia talk about the different fetal monitoring techniques used to monitor babies with abdominal wall defects before birth.

High resolution fetal ultrasound and ultrafast fetal MRI can help evaluate the growth of fetuses with an abdominal wall defect, including appearance of the bowel and lung growth. Close monitoring also allows clinicians to look for signs of distress in the fetus.

One of the things we look for prenatally with giant omphalocele is growth of the chest. Giant omphalocele is associated with pulmonary hypoplasia, or small lungs, which can significantly affect prognosis as babies will have trouble breathing.
