Pianist Sara Davis Buechner discusses and performs Domenico Scarlatti's Sonata in F minor K. 69. This is one of 550 or more sonatas by Scarlatti. Some of his sonatas like K. 69 are very unique, and in a very different vain - pieces that have a rather contemplative or ruminative or obsessional quality. Buechner illustrates. These sonatas, Scarlatti may have thought of as fugues not in the strict sense as Bach, but having canonic imitative elements. These ruminative sonatas sound to Buechner best on the modern piano, and not on the harpsichord, because they can take advantage of the beautiful cantabile tone of the piano and the striking peddling effects that can be used.
