In Acts chapter 7, Stephen, a follower of Jesus, is brought before the high priest and accused of blasphemy. In his defense, Stephen gives a detailed account of the history of the people of Israel, starting with Abraham and highlighting significant events such as the covenant with Abraham, the story of Joseph being sold into slavery, the oppression of the Israelites in Egypt, the life of Moses, and the giving of the law.
Stephen emphasizes the pattern of disobedience and rejection of God's chosen leaders by the Israelites throughout their history. He points out how the Israelites repeatedly turned away from God, worshiped idols, and resisted the Holy Spirit. Stephen accuses his audience of betraying and murdering the "Righteous One," referring to Jesus Christ.
The members of the Sanhedrin become enraged by Stephen's words, and despite his vision of heaven and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, they drag him out of the city and stone him to death.
