Скачать или смотреть First Nation reclaims territory by declaring Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area

The Mamalilikulla First Nation has declared part of its traditional territory that it lost to colonialism to be an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA).

The Nation views the declaration to be a step toward sovereignty and is seeking “co-governance” with Canadian and provincial governments. The latter talk of “co-management,” which would retain settler authority.

The area of the IPCA has been degraded by logging and fishing. The Mamalilikulla have a plan to restore the land and sea and are calling for a five-year moratorium on logging and immediate protection of a marine area called Hoeya Sill, home to rare corals and sponges.
