Qualcomm 5G Summit Masterclass: Driving the Technical Evolution of 5G and 5G Advanced

At the Qualcomm 5G Summit, Qualcomm Senior VP of Engineering John Smee delivers a masterclass about the technical evolution of 5G and 5G advanced.

Today, 5G is being widely deployed across the globe, and its technology evolution continues with 5G Advanced in 3GPP Release 18 and beyond. 5G Advanced marks the second phase of the 5G technology evolution — enabling a new wave of wireless innovation that will unlock the full power and potential of 5G.

5G Advanced has the potential to deliver a balanced and steady 5G evolution for the rest of the decade, and it will evolve the 5G foundation while continuing its expansion to new applications and use cases.

Smee opens by discussing the role of the connected intelligent edge in the evolution of 5G. A chief benefit of 5G tech is the convergence of compute capabilities with communications — a convergence Qualcomm has been at the vanguard of from the beginning. With a massive and always growing ecosystem of connected devices — many of which benefit from machine learning, extreme AI, and powerful sensors built-in — what does the future of 5G look like?

It looks like a world that is more instantaneously connected. And the value that’s being created at the connected intelligent edge requires low latency connection and new and more efficient means of computing. And that means extreme on-device intelligence and compute capabilities — capabilities that have broad application across industries. Whether in a smart school, smart hospital, or smart factory, the role of 5G at the edge of the network — combined with compute and AI — is how we achieve scale going forward.

Smee goes on to ask questions that look a decade into the future, like “How do you distribute compute in the 2030 era?” or “How are we designing 6G for the future of cloud computing, where the role of the connected intelligent edge is moving to even more instantaneous applications?” Everything we’re doing now with connected devices with on-device AI and distributed compute will help inform and define what we do in the future. As we build next-generation networks for next-generation use cases, we look at both evolutionary and revolutionary technologies.

Our technology investments at Qualcomm driving the connected intelligent edge are driving both 5G Advanced and 6G.
