Spectacular sites can be both a blessing and a challenge. This cliffside home faces both—with stunning ocean views on one side, and unstable soil on the other.

Originally a home by Chancellor and Patrick, the home had to be rebuilt on a 50-foot-deep foundation to prevent it from sliding onto the beach. But rather than creating a “glass box facing the sea,” the home seeks to balance views, protection, and everyday comfort.

The artificial landscape was designed in collaboration with Amanda Oliver, reinforcing the home’s connection to its natural surroundings. Coldstream stone walls, regenerative dune plants, and a green roof camouflage the home from the street—emphasizing a presence that ducks rather than overpowers.

From the shore, the house looks like part of the landscape. From inside, the view is not the only attraction—it is the experience of moving, entering, and living in a place that provides protection from the extremes of the outside.
