Here is an 80-year-old patient who underwent right total hip arthroplasty (replacement) over two and a half years ago. COVID-19 limited her access to skilled physical therapy and strengthening equipment based on her country’s (Canada) restrictions. She is now visiting the United States and has begun physical therapy to address the significant loss of bilateral (right greater than left) lower extremity strength and poor balance. Progressive exercises after hip replacement surgery are required to maximize her functional independence and reduce her fall risk.

She has significant spinal stenosis and rotoscoliosis and performs pain-free marching on the Shuttle Systems balance. The platform sways forward and backward, side to side, and vertical (springs), which helps her relearn how to balance on an unstable surface. This exercise will challenge her ability to shift weight to avoid losing balance by using her lumbopelvic girdle (core) muscles and her legs.

With continued strength and stabilization training, she can expect

Performing these exercises should not cause pain. If you experience pain while exercising, decrease the speed of your movement. If the pain persists - STOP. Mild soreness after exercising may be experienced after beginning a new exercise.
