Viking wire knitting wasn't my first foray into the world jewelry making, but from the very first time I tried it I was hooked! I soon learned there are different types of wire knitting and how versatile it truly is.

My name is Katherine Walters. I'm a Wire Artist, Wire Knitter, Wire Jewelry maker and Artisan Entrepreneur living on rugged Bell Island, Newfoundland and Labrador.

On this channel you will find jewelry making and wire knitting tips, tricks and tutorials to help you make beautiful and decorative items for yourself and your home. Using simple tools and materials, you will learn how to do different types of wire knitting as well as wire working skills necessary to bring your creative ideas to life.

Today's video:

This is the first in a series of videos that will show you how to get started doing Viking style wire knitting. Part 1 is about what you need to get started.

The tools you will need include:
wire cutters - https://www.riogrande.com/product/rio...
chain nose pliers - https://www.riogrande.com/product/sli...
adhesive tape
wooden dowel 3/8 inch in diameter cut to 7-10 inches in length
several old business cards taped together or an old plastic gift card, credit card or membership card
Pro-Polish Pad, steel wool or jewelry polishing cloth
a draw plate for wire knitting, with a handle (examples below)

a small tapestry needle (for gently lifting stitches on the dowel in case you've pushed them down too snuggly)
a bead mat to protect your work surface and help coral any bits of wire you trim off, and a small covered container to house any scrap wire afterwards.

Materials needed:
20 gauge dead soft copper wire (for what I call the "carriage" at the top of the dowel).
26 gauge dead soft copper wire for the actual knitting.

Rio Grande sells 4 ounce spools of 99% pure copper which is handy for those starting out. You can get a variety of gauges of dead soft wire here:
