What is happening on the I-85 northeast corridor?
Georgia was awarded a $110 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant for a project to reduce congestion in the on I-85 northeast corridor through a combination of programs including:
transit enhancements (more express buses heading up and down I-85)
intelligent transportation systems technology (cameras and monitoring)
variable pricing (toll to ride in the lane, price rises and falls with congestion)

The I-85 Express Lanes project involves the conversion of approximately 16 miles of existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes to High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes on I-85 from Chamblee Tucker Road, just south of I-285, to Old Peachtree Road.

Who is overseeing this HOT lane?
The Georgia Department of Transportation is managing construction that includes the installation of tolling technology; guard rails, signs and sign structures.

The State Road and Tollway Authority is managing the tolling system and the transponders required for motorists to use the lane.

The Georgia Regional Transportation Authority is managing the expansion of park-and-ride lots and Xpress commuter bus service.

Why is this project being built?
States and federal agencies recognize that we cannot build our way out of traffic congestion. Improving traffic requires creative approaches. According to GDOT and SRTA, the I-85 Express Lanes project is designed to:
provide reliable trip times on the corridor
offer more choices for commuters on how they travel through the corridor
enhance transit service across the region

When does the lane begin operating?
According to SRTA, the lane is scheduled to open in August, 2011.
