This video explores the idea that Western society exhibits schizoid traits as illustrated in the sort of extreme ideological positions that can be found within Identity Politics. I combine the ideas of the clinical psychologist Louis Sass and the psychiatrist R. D. Laing with the paintings of Giorgio De Chirico, Fancis Bacon, and Henri Rousseau.
Schizophrenia is a much misunderstood mental condition. For example, a common misconception is that schizophrenics are delusional and fail to recognise reality. The truth is more complex – many schizophrenics demonstrate an ironic awareness of their own delusions whereby they feel them to be real but they also know that they are not. In addition, schizophrenics tend to exhibit language problems and difficulties with expressing themselves coherently.
I argue that we can learn from schizoid behavioural traits to understand better various dysfunctional aspects of today’s society.
