Tallushatchee - or Tallaseehatchee - was a Muscogee or Creek village in today's Calhoun County, Alabama. It was attacked by Gen. John Coffee's brigade of mounted Tennessee troops on November 3, 1813. This was the battle where frontiersman Davy Crockett famously (or infamously) declared that he and his fellow soldiers "shot 'em down like dogs."

Why were the Creek warriors asleep in their cabins with their families? Why did the women, children, and elderly of Tallushatchee not evacuate knowing that an American army was just a few miles away? Was it because the town was really peaceful and not expecting an attack?

This story is one of the most critical of the Creek War of 1813-1814 and the War of 1812 in the South.
