Talk Title: Therabot: Over 6 Years Developing and Evaluating the First Generative AI Psychotherapy Chatbot

Right now, 3 out of 5 people do not receive minimally adequate care for mental health disorders, which is due in part to limited mental health providers. In his groundbreaking work, Dr. Nick Jacobson illustrates how AI assisted Chatbots could help close this gap in mental health care. However, he stresses that real human supervision and regulation is critical to creating effective, safe AI interventions. Dr. Jacobson’s work illustrates how we can approach the use of AI as a potential tool to provide much needed care to those who might not have access to it.

Dr. Nick Jacobson is an Associate Professor in Biomedical Data Science, Psychiatry, and Computer Science at Dartmouth College, where he directs the AI and Mental Health: Innovation in Technology Guided Healthcare (AIM HIGH) Laboratory. His research focuses on leveraging technology, including passive sensor data from smartphones and wearables, to enhance the assessment and treatment of anxiety and depression. He developed Therabot, the first fully generative AI for psychotherapy, and recently published the first randomized controlled trial of a generative AI psychotherapy intervention in The New England Journal of Medicine AI.
