This video expands upon the groundbreaking paper Designing and Managing for a Reliability of zero.
In 2010, co-authors Mike Hurley and Bill Purdy prepared this paper to expose some of the fallacies and counterproductive results of the attempts to make spacecraft exceedingly reliable. If you go bankrupt creating the worlds most reliable satellite you have achieved a reliability of zero. The paper was written when New Space was in its infancy, yet anticipated many of the key principles which have made New Space so successful
The goal of the video is to help all New Space participants to better think through what is most valuable and what might be counterproductive for their reliability of their endeavors. The video provides a thought provoking discussion of all the various methods used to provide reliability for satellites and discusses the pros and cons of each. This delivery is presented entirely in the light of New Space.
