The wonderful Tsjêbbe. Today we concentrate on perhaps one of the most delightful qualities of Rembrandt - Character. Because it is nothing short of wonderful to consider that the best painter ever almost giggled while he painted. He found shiny objects attractive, he desired fancy fabrics, he grinned and grimaced in his self-portraits. If Rubens felt like royalty with a golden brush, Rembrandt felt like a kid with a shovel and pail in a sandbox. You can tell that he painted, first and foremost, for his own amusement. I think his attraction towards character and his playfulness is definitely tied to his Dutch-ness. Spaniards were solemn, Italians were holy, Germans were crude, Belgians were regal, and the Dutch... well they were Dutch. He had an innate ability to display genius and whimsy at the same time. He was able to carry all the knowledge of the world and yet revel at nature as if it was undiscovered.
