Dive Deeper into Why the Venture Capital Ecosystem is so low in diversity
In the dynamic impact investing interview, we get a dynamic front row view of what it looks like to build a career in the dynamic and ever-evolving world of venture capital, where the need for inclusivity and diversity has never been more apparent. William Burckart and Megan Kashner have been at the forefront of this conversation for decades, and are highly regarded professors of impact investing at both Columbia SIPA and northwestern university.
In this episode, we discuss the many interrelated and intersectional reasons why the queer community continuously loses out on the benefits of a vibrant venture capital funding ecosystem. These reasons include systemic biases and discrimination, the limited visibility into the deeply elitist world of venture capital and the lack of necessary networks to build connections, the deeply embedded homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny of modern finance, the mix of hypersexualization, racism, and ableism that are an unfortunately universal part of the queer experience in business.
Compounding these issues, there is also the lack of tailored investment strategies seeking such entrepreneurs - something that Kashner and Burckart are specifically counteracting by creating Colorful Capital - and the internalized misogyny of many founders, which sadly can them to internalize the explicit or implicit messages they receive from an unkind world.
There is also the inherent difficulty of identifying lgbtq+ founders, since many of them will intentionally obscure or "cover" up the realities of their identity in order to gain acceptance, shield themselves from potential harms, and generally seek safety.
In the course of this conversation, they inadvertently wound up giving listeners an opportunity to grasp some of the core mental models that motivate systems thinkers, show the value of systems thinking in problem solving, and demonstrate how a complex systems analysis can identify key leverage points that can be used to affect broader change. In the process, they also wind up illuminating the art of systems thinking and creating a rich picture of the problems they hope to solve.
As a startup founder herself, sloane ortel, a vegan stock picker and ethical investment fund manager, found that the episode functioned as a mix of lesbian entrepreneurship affirmations, advice, and motivation to keep pursuing overall queer empowerment. And later on in the podcast, she and stanford professor Ashby monk commiserated about some of the setbacks, challenges, and mental health problems that many others who have walked similar paths must learn to endure.
Sloane ortel of Invest Vegan and Woodcache PBC and Ashby Monk of KDX venture capital and stanford university also delve deeply into the reality of institutional trading strategies in every episode, sharing impossible-to-find-elsewhere insights on how instiutional investors trade, what motivates their participation in foreign direct investments, and what makes sovereign wealth funds deeply special and interesting.
