The 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred on September 11, 2001, when 19 militants associated with the extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against prominent targets in the United States. The attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people and had lasting global and national repercussions.

Critical Events of 9/11:

World Trade Center Attacks:
Two of the hijacked planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were flown into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Both towers eventually collapsed due to the damage caused by the impacts and resulting fires.

Pentagon Attack:
A 3rd plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was flown into the Pentagon in Arlington, VA, severely damaging the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense.

Flight 93:
The 4th hijacked plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was likely headed for a target in Washington, D.C. (believed to be either the White House or the U.S. Capitol). However, passengers fought back against the hijackers, & the plane crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing all on board but preventing further destruction.

Immediate Aftermath:

National Grief and Mourning:
The attacks caused immense shock and grief across the U.S. and around the world. Vigils, memorials, and moments of silence were held in the days, weeks following, and now on the anniversary of 9/11, each subsequent year.

Ground Zero:
The site of the World Trade Center became known as Ground Zero, where recovery and clean-up efforts lasted for months. Eventually, it became the location of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, which opened in 2011.

Osama bin Laden's Death:

Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda and the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, was killed by U.S. Navy SEALs during a raid on his compound in Pakistan in May 2011, marking a significant moment in the War on Terror.

Islamophobia and Societal Impacts:
In the years following 9/11, many Muslim communities in the U.S. and around the world experienced increased discrimination, xenophobia, and hate crimes.

Veteran and Human Costs:
The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, combined with other anti-terrorism operations, resulted in significant loss of life, including U.S. military personnel, allied forces, and civilians in the affected countries. The long-term effects on veterans, including PTSD and other mental health issues, have been profound.

Legacy:
The 9/11 attacks permanently altered U.S. foreign and domestic policy, with lasting consequences for global geopolitics, civil liberties, and the lives of millions.
