It was a moment of joy for hundreds of workers and all the stakeholders of Gopalpur Port, on the south coast of Odisha, when it was reopened on Saturday, 12 December 2015. The post which was severely affected by cyclone Phailin, that struck Odisha coast on October 12, 2013, was temporarily closed.

On a grand occasion Minister of Transport and Commerce, Govt. of Odisha, Mr. Ramesh Chandra Majhi inaugurated the maiden shipment of ilmenite, the sand mineral products of Odisha Sands Complex (OSCOM), a unit of the Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL), to the Sri Lankan ship ‘S H Gracer’ to be shipped to China.

The state government would extend all help to the port authority for its development into an all weather port. “I hope Gopalpur would be a model port in the near future like that of Paradip”, said Mr. Ramesh Chandra Majhi, while inaugurating the event. He shared that the capacity of Gopalpur port is 9 million tons per annum and 19 berths are proposed in port.

The minister further said that, 13 such places have got the potential to be built as ports in state. “The state government has signed MoU for establishing two more ports at Subarnarekha creek in Balasore and Astarang in Puri. But it is delayed as a case is pending in the Odisha High Court and we would go ahead soon after the case is vacated”, he added.

“It’s a dream come true after a long gap”, Chairman of OSL Group and the Managing Director of Gopalpur Ports Limited (GPL) Mr. Mahimananda Mishra, commented.

Member of Parliament from Berhampur Lok Sabha Mr. Siddhant Mahapatra said, “We lost hope to revive the Gopalpur port as the extent of damage was unimaginable during the Phailin. But Mahimananda Mishra and his team have achieved a unique feat. I appeal the management and the workers for a greater cooperation to lead the port to a great height.”

“The ilmenite would be shipped to China”, said Mr. Man Mohan Maharana, Director GPL. While speaking to ‘OdishaLIVE’, Mr. Maharana further said that, a total of five vessels would be shipped from Gopalpur port with cargo as salt of Jayashree Chemicals, fertilizer and coal to different destinations during December. When the first berth was inaugurated on Sat, the second berth would be ready by March 2016. “We have now initiated steps to open 3 to 4 berths during the first phase and 8 berths during the second phase”, he shared.

Dr. Ramesh Chandra Chau Patnaik, MLA, Berhampur; Dr. Priyanshu Pradhan, MLA, Chatrapur; Mr. Purna Chandra Sethi, MLA, Khallikote; Mr. Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Congress Chief Whip in Odisha Legislative Assembly; Ms. K Madhavi, Mayor Berhampur Municipal Corporation, Mr. Suvendu Das, President-HR, OSL Group, and many other dignitaries attended the inaugural function. Mr. Charchit Mishra, Director OSL, presented vote of thanks.

Gopalpur Port, one of the unique ports of south coast, is an environment friendly port. It is developed in a 4km stretched coastline at Goplapur-on-Sea with 15 covered sheds having an area of 12K square metre for storage. The first berth, which was opened on Saturday, is a multi-purpose berth having semi-mechanized handling facilities giving versatility in handling all type of cargo whether import or export.
