Only 119 schools are currently accredited by the Accrediting Council on Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC), which requires academic programs to meet eight rigorous standards of accountability, including Standard 4: Diversity and Inclusion. This panel of accreditation experts and journalism education leaders will debate the pros and cons of ACEJMC accreditation. Some “pros” might include expectations for smaller class sizes, tenure-track faculty density, and protection of First Amendment rights of student journalists. Some “cons” might include increased costs for human and other resources, as well as intensified public and/or legislative scrutiny from parties opposed to any of the accreditation standards.
