The name “Theotokos” is, according to the theology of the ecumenical councils, a NECESSARY implication of the reality of the “God-Man”. God becomes man through Mary; just as it pleases Him to work in and through us to enter into communion with His creation. The person of Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the total content of God’s communion with the world, so to enter the Father’s house consists of entering into Jesus Christ. Since it is an eternal fact that Mary is the Mother of Jesus, the Word of God, she is THE Mother, the eschatological Mother whose prayers unite heaven and earth.
