When we think of Christmas, we often picture a cozy stable, three wise men at the manger, snow on the ground, and a calm little town. But what does the Bible actually say, and what do we really know from history?

In this special episode, we’ll walk through the biblical text and the historical background of Jesus’ birth—separating tradition from Scripture while still treasuring the wonder of the incarnation.

We’ll look at:

🔹 The Real Timeline – Why Jesus was likely born a few years “before” 1 AD
🔹 The Setting of Bethlehem – A crowded town, a humble place, likely a home or lower room rather than a tidy wooden stable
🔹 Joseph & Mary’s Situation – Betrothal, shame, travel, and obedience
🔹 The Shepherds – Why their visit matters and what it tells us about God’s heart
🔹 The Magi – Why they almost certainly did not arrive the night of His birth, and what we actually know about them
🔹 Herod, the Census, and Rome – The political tension into which Jesus was born
🔹 The Meaning of the Birth – God with us, the true King arriving in humility

We will work primarily from Matthew 1–2 and Luke 1–2, looking closely at what is written, what history supports, and what may just be later tradition. Through it all, we want to keep our focus where Scripture keeps it: on Jesus Himself—God in the flesh, born to save His people from their sins.

In Romans 10, Paul turns from God’s sovereign choice in salvation to humanity’s responsibility to hear, believe, and call on the Lord. Israel has zeal—but not according to knowledge. They are seeking righteousness through the law instead of submitting to the righteousness of God in Christ.

This chapter gives one of the clearest explanations of how a person is saved—by confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in His resurrection. It also shows the responsibility of believers to preach the Gospel, because “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

We see Jesus as the end (fulfillment) of the law for righteousness, the Lord we confess, and the One on whom we call and are saved. The Gospel is simple, powerful, and for “everyone who believes.”
