In this On Location recording Kaushiki Chakraborty renders a restful Alaap (introduction) in Raag Jaunpuri. Kaushiki is one of the finest vocalists in Indian classical music. Her technique is the result of years of intense training. She spent much of her childhood living at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, one of India’s premiere music institutions, while her father Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty worked there. She has received international recognition and acclaim for her music.

Raag Jaunpuri is derived from the Asavari Thaat (scale) and drops Ga (3rd note) in its ascending climb. The King note is Komal Dha (flat 6th) and the Queen note is Komal Ga (flat 3rd). It is sung during the 2nd quarter of the day (between 9 am and 12 pm) according to the time theory in Hindustani or North Indian Classical system. The King and the Queen notes are magnified by gliding upon (Meend) so that both Dha and Ga hit a lower-than-usual-microtone (Shruti). This enhances the grandeur and devotional mood of Raag Jaunpuri while subtly maintaining its restive stance.

An interesting reference may be drawn here with the French word “en dehors”, which, in music, means the melody line that needs to stand out or is emphasized. Inballet, this term refers to the outward movement of one leg with the other based firmly on the ground. In both cases, one may notice how appropriate it would be to call Dha and Ga as the en dehorsin Jaunpuri.

If personified, Jaunpuri may be said to be a striking lady with a calm, deferential demeanor.

The Patiala Gharana, which she represents, is one replete with a strong, ornate style of improvisation. This clip reveals the other side of this emerging prima donna of Indian Classical music as she merges the divine mood of the Raga, with her beautiful surroundings, the stillness and with the wisdom of an Octogenarian.
