Hey everyone, Shane here with etrailer.com Today I have a 2020 Tesla Model Y. Has the EcoHitch installed on it. We're going to be taking a look at the CURT towing starter kit. When we install hitches, we always recommend if you're ever going to plan on towing later on, get a ball mount, a ball. We also recommend locking pins because if you have a ball mount installed on here. Maybe you tow a small trailer.

Maybe you have a small bass boat. When you go to put it in, if you don't take your ball mount out, can be easily taken off. Because it's going to fit into a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, which is going to be your most common. You just have a pin and clip in there, go out and pull it out. You can pretty much use any receiver, that has a two inch by two inch opening.

This kit is going to come with the ball mount, two inch by two inch or I'm sorry, a two inch ball, which again is going to be your most common for most of your trailers. The ball mount gives you a two inch drop or three quarter inch rise, which support this vehicle. Installed on it, just like this. Our receiver do openings, give us about a 15 inch rise with me with dropping this two inches, we're actually dropping down to 13 inches. What I recommend is taking the ball off, putting it in the rise position, which is going to get you closer to that 16 inch mark.

As I mentioned, it's going to come with the ball, ball mount. It's also going to come with a lock. So we do happen to go put our boat in the water, drop our trailer off, and we forget to take that out and we can lock this in place. Nobody can come up and take. Kit is going to come with two keys.

Once you get your ball mount lined up, Simply remove the one end, slide the pin in place. It is going to require you to have the key in. Once you get it, you have the other end on you simply twist the key. Your receiver is locked in place. It is going to come with a pin and clip, if necessary. It's also going to come with a cover. However, with this vehicle, being the Tesla, the hitch is going to come with a cover with a magnet on it. So when you don't have your bolt on place, this cover slides back into the receiver tube basically makes the hitch hidden. Ball mount itself is going to come with a case. So winter time, we got a park for the winter. We're not going be towing anything. Take our ball mount off. It's going to store in here along with our locks, with our cover and our pin and clip. Our ball mount is going to be a steel construction, black powder coat finish. It's really going to hold up well against rust and corrosion. The ball and the locking pin are going to be a chrome plated. As far as our weight capacities go, we're gonna have a 750 pound max tongue weight, which is a downward pressure here on the ball, and a 7,500 pound gross trailer weight with the trailer, plus the load included. I always recommend check the owner's manual on the vehicle and also check the receiver. Whichever number is lower, you are going to to with that number. So, the vehicles towing capacity is lower, it's the lowest out of the three, you want to make sure you go with that number. The same thing with the hitch, if the hitch is lower than the vehicle and the ball mount, you want to make sure you go with the hitch. One thing I do want to point out the shank, is going to be one inch in diameter. So if you go with the kit and you want to change the volume, cause you may have something else you tow, or maybe you want to use it on another vehicle, you want to put a seven-eighths or maybe a two and five 16th ball on here. You just want to make sure that the shank itself is one inch in the diameter. Overall, I think this kit is a great starter kit. It's basically going to come with everything you need to tow a small trailer. Ball mount, your two inch ball, your pin and clip, your locking pin and your hitch cover if you needed it. That way later on if you decide to upgrade your trailer coupler has a two and five-sixteenths, ah requires a two and five-sixteenths ball. All you have to do is change the ball out. Just got to keep in mind, make sure you pick up one with the one inch shank. That's gonna to do it for look at the CURT towing starter kit on a 2020 Tesla Model Y.
