Bielefeld is an independent city in the administrative district of Detmold in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia. With a population of around 344,000 (as of 2023), it is the largest city in the region of East Westphalia-Lippe and its economic center. In North Rhine-Westphalia, Bielefeld is the eighth largest city. On the list of large cities in Germany, it ranks 18th in terms of population and 11th in terms of area.

The Westendparty, which always takes place at the start of the semester, was in the meantime the largest university indoor party in Germany with around 10,000 visitors, and is still known far beyond the borders of Bielefeld.
