Easy Bee Removal to Start an Apiary (Small African Bee colony)

The perfect swarm to remove for a beginner beekeeper. A recently landed African honeybee (apis mellifera scutellata) removal from inside a small compost bin.

This was a recently landed swarm at a home in Alberton, South of Johannesburg, South Africa. We decided with this removal being easily accessible to gently remove the colony by scooping them into the hive box and not using the beevac. There was no comb as the swarm of bees had landed the day before.

We were able to easily round up all the bees and place them in the hive box. While transporting the colony bearded together on the frames. This made it easy when we got to the new apiary with concrete hives, to simply pick up the frames and place them in the hive.

Our recommendation would be to place a queen guard on the front of the hive and also feed the colony with an internal feeder to assist them in building up the comb and provide them with the necessary to adapt to the new environment.
