A coalition of Korean American groups in the U.S. is making a push for the use of two names for the body of water between Korea and Japan.
The coalition submitted a petition with 108-thousand signatures to the federal government on Tuesday.
It also sent a letter to members of the International Hydrographic Organization, except Japan last week... ahead of its general assembly in Monaco on Monday.
The organization is expected to settle the naming dispute by Friday.
The coalition wants the name East Sea to be used alongside the name Sea of Japan, which is the only one that's currently recognized by the IHO.
They've been promoting the use of East Sea for U.S. maps and textbooks since 2007.
